SURVEYORS’ INSTITUTE. (Per Press Association.) Wellington, January 7. At the annual meeting of the New Zealand Surveyors’ Institute to-day the following officers were elected President, T. Humphries; vico-presi-ident, H. Sladdon; councillois, n. Smith and J. E. Fulton; members, A Craig, H. Fendall, J. Simmonds, F. Thompson, G. Parkinson, 1. T Davie, R. Black, J. Welch, and W. Wheeler. ATTEMPTED MURDER TRIAL. Nelson, January 7. Robert Alfred Schwass, charged with attempting to murder his wife at Richmond on December 19th, was to-day committed for trial. THE MAORI’S FIREMEN. SLANDER ACTION THREATENED. FERRY SERVICE ARRANGED FOR (Per Press Association.) Wellington, January 7. In connection with the trouble on the Maori, a seamen’s meeting held last evening unanimously passed a resolution giving tho Press Association until 12 o’clock on Wednesday to remit an apology with the signature of the person who sent the message to the Association office in the first instance, and, failing that, the Union’s solicitors will be instructed to proceed against the Press Association in a Court action for slander. The Maori is now tied up to the Clyde Quay Wharf, and the question of’paying off all the crow is being considered. There will, it is understood, be no difficulty about the service to-night. Both the Mararoa and the Mokoia will, it is expected, be able to get away at the regular time. PROSPECTS OF A SETTLEMENT- > Wellington, January 8. Up to 1 o’clock to-day there were no fresh developments regarding the trouble on the Maori. The men are holding a meeting this afternoon, and the prospects of settlement are said to be promising. MINISTERS ON THE MOVE. 0 (Per Press Association.) Thames, January 7. In reply to a deputation who wanted a railway across the Hauraki Plains, the Hon. Mr. Fraser (Minister of Public Works) said the flying surveys of railways already promised will keep officers employed for years. In reply to another deputation the Minister said he intended introducing an amendment to the Mining Act next session.
