The ‘Evening Standard’ says that, despite the fact that five-sixths of the Unionist Party, and many of the Liberals, support Lord Roberts, the political loaders oppose tho functions of compulsory service, believing it is hopeless until the working men allow their sons to give up six months to learn to defend their homes. A correspondent from Sydney, writing to the ‘Daily Chronicle,’ says that Spence’s report asserting that the cost of living in England is much greater than in Sydney is grossly misleading, untrue, and a cruelty to intending immigrants.
