RACING FIXTURES^ January 21 and 22.—Foxton Racing Club. February I.—Canterbury Jockey Club. February 5 and 6.—Egmont Racing Club. At the Canterbury Park (New South Wales) meeting on Saturday, the Canterbury Welter resulted: Santaimo 1, Wild West (New Zealand) 2, Eunella 3. The Peter Head Steeplechase at Cheltenham (South Australia) on Boxing Day proved one of the most exciting steeplechases yet witnessed on that course. Immediately after the rise of the barrier, horses began to fall, and the ambulance was unable to cope with numerous accidents. Two horses fell and were killed, and several jockeys received minor injuries. America is the home of big things, and apparently nothing notable is allowed to leave that country without a demonstration. Even prominent horses are included in the general worship, and Rock Sand furnishes a case in point. According to a New York correspondent, Rock Sand arrived at Jersey City from August Belmont’s stud farm, Lexington, Kentucky, in a special steel car, which was liberally padded and decorated with French and American flags. The companions do voyage for the stallion were Topiary, the dam of Tracery, winner of the St. Leger, and who went from England with Rock Sand, and Golden View, a sister of Fair Play. All this happened while Rock Sand was on his way from America to France. Mr. J. Cleeland, who won the Melbourne Cup with Wollamai in JBio, is still alive, and resides at Cape AVollanuii, Philip Island. The veteran sportsman is in his BGth year, and not bv any means in good health.
