A DEVASTATING FIRE.

o SWEEPS FARMS CLEAR OF FEED. (Per Press Association.) Whangarei, January 4. A, fire broke out in the Whakat’ri district on Tuesday, and is now assuming alarming proportions, covering an area of eight miles long and half a mile wide. The continued dry feather made a shortage of feed, but now some of the farms are nearly devastated.

One farmer, 'who was milking fifty cows on 200 acres, had more than half of his feed destroyed. The cocksfoot crops were also destroyed. The fire is still raging, and settlers have engaged all available hands to beat out the fire, but their only hope is a heavy fall of rain. It is impossible to state the amount of the damage.
