GUBERNATORIAL PRIVILEGES
London, January 3
Replying to Mr Wedgwood, member lor Newcastle, Mr Harcour, Colonial Secretary said, that he was considering regulations, to prevent retiring Governors and other colonial officials from, becoming directors or employees of companies operating in the colony which they had just left, without the Governor's permission. Mr Harcowt’s reply refers to the Crown colonies and protectorates.
THE NEXT ELECTION
London, January 3
With reference to Mr Bonar Law’s acceptance of the challenge of Ministerialists with regard to tue statements that he was merely debating points, a member of the Government who conceals his identity predicts that the next election will be based on the franchise and not on Home Rule. The Labour view is that neither the Unionists nor the Radicals want an election. The former are concerned with internal differences, and the latter dread the effect of the Insurance Act. THE FRANCHISE BILL. London, January 3. The Franchise Bill Committee stage ■will begin in the last week in January. THE HOME RULE BILL. London, January 3. The’Home Rule discussion is life* less. Six clauses were reviewed and guillotined. Seven Government amendments were inserted without explanation. "
GENERAL ELECTION IMMINENT. (Received 10.5 a.m.) London, January 3. The Liberal organs declare that the Government is united, and will precipitate a general election, notwithstanding Ihe temptation arising out of the Unionists’ distraction and embarrassments.
