TAFT AND ROOSEVELT.
A UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR’S APOLOGY. (Received 12.15 p.m.) Washington, January 2. Professor McNaughton, of the McGill University, in a recent speech here, derided President Taft and Mr Roosevelt, and said that they were absolutely without classical knowledge. President Taft owed more to David Hamm than to Homer or Hebrew scribes. Professor McNaughton now apologises, saying that he meant nothing personal, and was speaking simply as classical scholars. The American press bitterly attacked McNaughton.
