MAN DROPS DEAD

An unfortunate affair happened at Waikouaiti races to-day. H. B‘. Mountney, whose son had a horse running in' the second trot, dropped dead while watching the horses doing their preliminary gallops. The deceased gentleman was an old resident of Otago.
ALLEGED PERJURY CHARGE
Auckland, December 30
At the instance of the New Zealand police, Walter Edmond Harvey has been arrested at Sydney on a charge of perjury. It is alleged that, on December 14, at Waihi, Harvey did falsely swear that he had no revolver in his possession, and did not point a revolver at William Hunt at Karangahake on November 10. Harvey left by the Wimmera last week, but was detained on ar a val at Sydney, Detective Sweeney left for Sydney to-night to apply for extradition and escort him back.
FIGHT WITH A LEOPARD
Wellington, December 31
The temporary freedom of a leopard belonging to Barton’s Circus caused some excitement this afternoon. An attendant was cleaning the animal’s cage out, and, to facilitate the work, put the feline into a cage occupied by some baboons. The parties did not agree, however, and very soon the l.’g cat bad devoured a couple of the apes. The attendant made desperate efforts to replace the leopard, which was now thoroughly aroused by the taste of blood, and failed, for the animal pulled free from his chain and was at liberty. At this moment, “Tackles,’' one of the circus staff, came on the scene, sized up the position, and grappled with the leopard, calling wildly for help. This was soon at hand, and the animal was reduced by much cudgelling to a semi-conscious state, and put back into its compartment. “Tackles’ ” plucky act no doubt averted a serious, possibly fatal, outcome of the adventure, and he escaped with some flesh wounds on the throat and body. POSTPONEMENTS IN WELLINGTON. Wellington, January 1. Rain set in early this morning, and continued steadily all day. The cricket matches between the local and Canterbury senior and junior Wednesday representatives were postponed till tomorrow. The Wellington centre bowling tourney was opened, hut had to he postponed when only one round bad been played.
