ACCIDENTS & FATALITIES.

FATAL MOTOR ACCIDENT. (Per Press Association.) ' Hawera, January 1. A fatal accident occurred at the railway station crossing this afternoon when a motor car driven by Mr Frederick Lutterworth, of Opunake, with whom Mr John ,Young, also of- Opunake, was run into by the special train from New Plymouth. Young was killed instantaneously. Lutterworth was seriously injured and was taken to the Hawera Hospital. Young is a single man, aged 34, and a blacksmith. The motor car was smashed to pieces. A DROWNING FATALITY. Auckland, January 1. A man named Wheatley was drowned while bathing at Morrinsville yesterday. . He was with two companions and suddenly disappeared. At a late hour the body was recovered. Deceased was a,good swimmer and it is supposed hej wad seized with cramp. He was married and leaves one child. He Was employed, as a carpenter. BURNED TO DEATH. 7 .Auckland* 'January 1. A retired sea captain, 70 years of age, named Thomas McLean, was burned to death in his cottage at Liakeh.ljead eijM This morning. The fire destroyed thej pottage, two stables, and other! structures, comprising part of Verran and Son’s hostelry yard. The damage is estimated at £2OO. The insurances are not available. AO the inquest a verdict of accidental death was returned. A nasty accident befel a young man named Bryan Waymouth at Hukerenut on Boxing Day. He was running in the Railway Handicap, and when nearing the finish he stumbled over a child which had wandered on to the course. Another runner, named Hamilton, fell over Waymouth, impaling Way mouth’s foot with the spikes of his running shoes. Two nasty gashes were inflicted.
