ACCIDENTS & FATALITIES.
A BICYCLE ACCIDENT. (Per Press Association.) Dunedin, December 25. A lad named Arthur Castle, 15 years of age, was riding down a hill beside the Northern Cemetery this afternoon when the machine got away. The boy was thrown heavily and was taken to' the hospital unconscious. His head was badly knocked about. He resides at Opoho. ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. Christchurch, December 25. A man named W. G. Hay, 37 years of age, residing at Sydenham, was admitted to the hospital at midnight on Tuesday, suffering from a wound in his throat which he had inflicted on himself with a razor. While assistance was being got for him Hayattempted to drown himself in a bath. His condition is not considered serious. Hay is unmarried, and love troubles are said to have been his reason for attempting to take his own life. SUICIDE BY SHOOTING. Dunedin, December 21. The police received a wire from Owaka to-day that John Maher, mid-dle-aged and married, a labourer at Kahuika, committed suicide by shooting himself. A SQUALID DEATH. Auckland, December 20. Johanna Costello, aged _ 70, was found dead on the floor of'an empty house which she had been permitted to occupy until a tenant was found. In the room she occupied the, conditions were - indescribable for their squalor, which is remarkable, as the woman is reputed to be possessed of means.
AN INEBRIATE’S FATE. Auckland, December 27. William Moncricff, aged 46-, died in the hospital from hemorrhage of the brain this morning. He was arrested in the street on Monday in a state of helpless intoxication. A JUMPING ACCIDENT. Gisborne, December 27. George Campbell, a young man about 25 years of age, was riding the horse Minnehaha in a leaping match at Waeringaahika sports to-day. The horse caught the top rail and fell, throwing the rider, who was seriously injured by contact with the horse’s hoofs. Campbell was brought into town, and is at present in a precarious condition.

Dunedin, December 27
Tho hotly of a man has been found in the hush near the Northern Cemetery this morning. It was in a decomposed state, and it was practically impossible to identify it. Lying alongside was a rifle which had a discharged cartridge in the barrel. There is no cine as to the victim’s identity. A LUNATIC’S TRICK. Wellington, December 27. William James Lewis, a patient at Porirua Mental Hospital, escaped at midday cm Tuesday. He was seen yesterday by settlors’ children at Makara. A little later a lire was noticed, and it was discovered that Lewis bad burnt his , asylum clothes. Lewis, who is evidently now naked, has not yet been recaptured. Wellington, December 28. Lewis was recaptured at Makara yesterday in a naked condition. SUICIDE BY POISONING. Wellington,' December 27. James Hensliilwood, patternmaker, was found dead on Xmas Eve at Ins residence, Salisbury Avenue. A bottle of cyanide of potassium was found bv the bodv.
