NOTES by “CICERO.” " The “sports” of this part (i the Dominion will be most interested in the Taranaki Jockey Club’s meeting, which opens on Thursday next. The Club have received a fair acceptance, and a good day’s riming should result. The field in the Haufcoki Plate promises to be a large one. Of those nominated, Patronymic and White Crane are fair horses, and should make the finish interesting. Ten very moderate performers appear in the Borough Handicap. Of those engaged, Simple Sam stands out best; in fact, he is the only horse in the field with any performances to his credit. The Welter contains the names of a much better class of horses. St. Serf and Aruake will he well backed. Only seven paid up iu the Flying. Ascalon is looked on as a “moral’’ by those “in tne know,” but strange things have happened on the Taranaki course before to-day. Of the ten angaged in the Hack Hurdles, Timothy and Bercola show ino c t promise. The latter went splend’dlv in Hawera on Saturday morning. Eight have cried content in the Christmas Handicap. North-East appears a class above Ins opponents, but claims an engagement in the Marion Cup, a race worth 400 sovs. Patriotic went really well in Hawera on Saturday, when he beat Con the Shaughraun, Cornelian, and Sam Pan very easily, lie will be ridden by N. Goddard, whose first public mount it will be. Whether this light boy will do justice to the bay. gelding remains to bo seen. A number of fair sprinters will be seen out in the Stewards’ Hack. The top weight, Phroso, has aNgreat reputation, and just suffered defeat at the Canterbury meeting. Boronia and Glenrern are both very well, and should make it interesting for Mr. Moore’s nomination. A big crowd of sprinters should face the barrier in the Scurry. Patronale will probably see a very short price in this event, and on Rangltikci form looks “absolute.” Entries for the Stratford Club’s meeting are greately better than last year, being 111 this year, as compared with 96 at the previous meeting. All arrangements are well in band and the patrons will find the train arrangements particularly acceptable. Mr. Tnompson will again officiate as starter, and that gentleman will be remembered as giving every satisfaction last year.
