HIGH COMMISSIONER’S REPORT.

The High Commissioner, cabling under date London, December 21, says: Mutton.—The market is very firm owing to the short supply. Canterbury 7|d, North Island 4|d, South Island 4jd, Argentine 4fd, Australian 4i-d.

Lamb.—The market is firm, with a good demand for all qualities. Canterbury, average price 5Jd, other qualities s|d, Argentine s|d, Australian s£d. Beef.—The market is firm with a hardening tendency. New Zealand hinds, average price 3£d, fores 3Jd. Butter.—The market is quiet, with a tendency in favour of buyers. Tite Christmas demand has ceased. Trade will he quiet until after the holidays. New Zealand first grade 116 s to J2-ls, Australian 115 s, Argentine 115 s, Silurian 110 s, Danish 13is.

Cheese.—The market is quiet, with little doing, but good foeiing prevails. New Zealand white 61s, coloured 625. Hemp.—The market is steady and prices well maintained. A fair demand continues. Gocd fair £33, fair grade £3l 10s, any position. Manila fair current £33, forward shipments £34 10s. The output from Manila for the week was 18,000 bales. Wool.—The market remains firm.

Wheat.—New Zealand long-berried, ex granary, 36s per quarter of 4961 b. Kauri Gum.—Dark brown selected £4 to £5 per ton, dark brown chips £1 10s to £2 10s, rescraped pale amber £lO to £ll, three-quarter pale scraped £3 10s to £9, diggers’ chips (good) £2 to £3. The market is quiet, but moderate business is doing. The stock at the end of November amounted to 187 tons. LONDON MARKETS. London, December 22. Hides.—At the sales there was a small supply. Leather.—The market was firm, and Stocks small. Best heavy Sydneys 13d to 14£d; basils, firm, best Sydneys, Tld to New Zealands 16od to 22d. Hares.—Firm, about 2s 6d.

Rabbits.—Quiet and unchanged. The trade is devoting all its attention to poultry. Sheep.—Canterbury, light and medium nominally 5d : New Zealand ewes, none offering. Lambs.—Light 5-Jd, medium s}d, heavy s ; ;d, South Island and North Island, none offering. South American chilled beef, fore 3|d, hinds sd. Other meats were unchanged.

AUSTRALIAN MARKETS

Sydney, December 23

Potatoes show a further , advance. Locals are emoted at £lO and Tasmanian at £ll 10s.

BEET SUGAR

Silver 28fd. Professor Licht estimates that the production of beet sugar has increa ed 1,322,000 tons, and the surplus for the season will be 2,084.000.
