The Stratford Evening Post. WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED THE EGMONT SETTLER. MONDAY, DECEMBER 23, 1912. MARCH OF THE MOTOR.
The ‘Daily Mail,’ discussing motorcars and the exhibition at Olympia, points out that to possess a. motor-car is not merely a pleasure and a convenience reserved for the rich, for not only have prices come down within the means of the hard-working professional or small business man, the cost of running has also dropped, largely owing to simplification of design and to lightness of bodies, resulting in less wear upon tyres. It is held that one thing now much needed is standardisation of parts, and here comes in the British manufacturer’s opportunity. There is talk of a £500,000 plant being erected for the construction of small cars on a large
scale. If that proves true, the American makers of the excellent, low-priced cars, which sell in such large numbers in Britain and in these colonies, will have keen competition to meet. They have shown not only how to build cheaply, but also how to sell. Their business methods are well worth study. In the higher-priced classes Britain holds her own well. Franco cannot now show better engines or more attractive body-build-ing than Britain’s best firms. With cars of medium value —say from £250 to £4oo—it is contended Britain can safelv meet her rivals. Now it only
remains for tho British manufacturer to ovorcomo liis deeply-rooted objection to supplying a cheaper article. “Naturally,” tho ‘.Mail’ concludes, “tho £IOO car, when it conies, will not lie as solid or as lasting as the dearer makes. But it will serve very well for the purpose of many thousands of people who are ready and anxious to taste tho joy of driving their own twoseaters. The taxicab is already enrolled among the necessities of life in
a, town. The private motor-car will soon become equally a necessity among country dwellers.”
