CRICKET. (Per Press Association.) Wellington, December 20. The Wellington representatives met the New bouth Wales teachers’ team at tne Basin Reserve to-day in line weather on a fast wicket. The visitors scored 153 (Freeman 46, McMullen not out 38). Robinson took three wickets for i 6 runs and Grimmet four for 41. As the light was had Wilson, the Wellington skipper, sent in his weaker batsmen, and at the call of time Wellington had lost six wickets for 35 runs. Harvey was very deadly, and captured four for 13. ‘ Gibbes (14) was the only double figure scorer for Wellington so far. SWIMMING. Auckland, December 20. At the Waitemata Swimming Club’s carnival this evening M.- E. Champion won his heat in the 100 yards event in 61 4-ssecs, breaking the New Zealand record of 63 2-5 secs, held by Bruce. Champion swam second in the final in the same time. The race was timed by four competent men all the watcher agreeing. CLAIM FOR DAMAGES. Dunedin, December 20. The compensation claim Dougherty v. Milne, claim for £SOO, in connection with the death of plaintiff’s husband at Wyndham, on April Bth. Deceased had been commissioned by Milne, his employer, to inspect a horse with a view to' purchase, and while walking along the railway line on the way to inspect the animal he was struck by an engine and killed. The defence contended that the accident did not arise out of deceased’s 'emnloyment, an that the act of deceased in walking on the railway lino was obviously dangerous and unnecessary. The Court expressed the opinion that the accident arose in the course of deceased’s employment, but decision was reserved. MIXED BATHING. Auckland, December 20. A meeting of the Works Committee of the City Council yesterday decided that so soon as the holidays are over the new Shelly Beach baths at Ponsonby should be open at certain fixed hours for family bathing. The Mayor (Mr C. J. Parr) in referring to the fact that the scheme had been so successfully inaugurated in Christchurch, said that there was no reason why it should not be just as successfully introduced here. Strict regulations would have to be observed. No spectators would be allowed in the baths, and no one would be admitted unless accompanied by a member of the opposite sex. The bath officials would see that there was every regard for propriety. < DOCTORS AND FRIENDLY SOCIETIES. Invercargill, December 20. The secretary* of the local branch of the British Medical Association has received an official communication from the Lodge Committee to-day inviting medical men to reconsider their decision as lodge officials. He believes that the present situation has arisen through a misunderstanding. As a reply to this communication is desired late in January, it is anticipated that a settlement just and fair to both parties will be arrived at soon after that date. AN ESCAPED PRISONER. Wellington, December 20. Peter Young, a recent arrival from Scotland, serving a sentence of six months’ imprisonment for breaking, entering and theft at Hastings, is at large. He had been removed from the Terrace Gaol to the hospital for treatment this afternoon, and about 5 o’clock had disappeared. THE SWEET PEA SOCIETY. Palmerston North, December 20. The annual meeting of the National Sweet Pea Society of New Zealand, held to-night, was attended by representatives from Hawera, Porirua, Masterton, Hutt and Wellington. The meeting carried unanimously the following resolution; That the annual show be held in a different centre each year. Officers were elected as follows: Patron, Lord Liverpool: president, Mr J. B. Hareourt (Wellington) ; vice-presidents, Messrs H. Brett (Auckland), Trcventhick (Wellington) ; council, Mrs E. C. Brown (Epsom), and Messrs Plimmer and Clayton (Auckland); J. J. Kerslake and Fox (Wellington), Chas. Goodson (Hawera), C. Reader (Stratford), F. J. Nathan' and Mrs Lionel Abraham (Palmerston) , Sellars and Mrs Wood (Wairarapa), J. H. Murdock (Napier), F. Penn (Otaki), Holder (Ponrua), F. W.* Hamilton and B. Pascal (Nelson) ; secretary and treasurer, Mr J . C. Lane (Palmerston North).
