The South Melbourne cricketers commenced their New Zealand tour with a match against Wairarapa to-day. The weather was tine and the pitch in good order. Wairarapa went first to the wickets,, and were dismissed for 07. The only scorers to reach double figures were Collins 20, Congdon 12, and Jordan 10. South Melbourne had lost eight wickets for 217 when stumps were drawn. The chief scorers were: Sykes 48, Scott 37, Deas 35, and Kyle 30 (not out).

THE HAWKE CUP.

Wanganui, December 18,

A representative match—the first of a series for the Hawke Cup—commenced here to-day in fine weather. The teams were South Taranaki and Wanganui. The former batted first on a perfect wicket, but were quickly disposed of for 26. E. Hollard and Bernau were unplayable, the former securing five wickets for fourteen runs, and Bernau four for seven. Wahganui occupied the wickets for 190 minutes, during which time they compiled 453 runs. Orton contributed an admirable 147, batting superbly with strokes all round the wicket. The other principal scorers were: Bathgate 66, Butterworth 47, Furrie 37, Bernau 35, Holland 23, Howard 18, Tilyard 15, Barrett 16 (not out), and Murchio 16. Only one batsman failed to reach double figures. NORTH TARANAKI REPS. The following teams of North Taranaki representatives have been selected by Mr. G. Gudgeon (sole selector) :—To play Wanganui on December 25 and 26: D. Clegg, W. Matthews, W. H. Perham, Summerville, G. Pullen, J. C. Summer, A. Osborne, G. Gudgeon, K. B. Bain, E. Sarten, and W. Fuller.

To play at Hawera against South Taranaki on December 27 and 28: W. Matthews, J. C. Summer, A. Osborne, W. P. Nicoll, Summerville, K. B. Bain W. H. Perham, R. Marsh, N. Arden, E. Sarten, and W. Fuller.
