THE STEAMER JOHN.

SOUTH OF NAPIER

(Per Press Association.) Napier, December 19

The steamer John, 343 tons, owned by Captain Hull, of Wellington, and sailing under Captain Helm, ran ashore at the mouth of the Tukituki River, ten miles south of Napier, during the night. She was on her way from Gisborne to Wellington, having left Poverty Bay at 1.15 p.m. yesterday, with 60 bales of wool. The Tangaroa has been despatched to render assistance. Details are meagre, but it is stated tliat the crew ai'e all safe. The sea is calm. Later.
