MONTHLY MEETING

The Taranaki Education Board ino J . at N’civ Plymouth yesterday, the chair man (Mr H. Trimble) presiding. Present: Messrs R. Masters A. A 1 Bradbury, G. A. Adlum, W. L. Ken nedy, A. Morton. Leave of absence was granted to Mr A. L. Halcombc and Mr W. Rogers. Scholarship Regulations. The inspectors reported that, aftei carefully considering the question ol the revision of the scholarship regulations referred to them by the Board, they would recommend that clause t be amended to read as follows: ‘ tin annual examination for competitors for junior scholarships shall be the examination for Junior National Scholarships, and the annual examination ol competitors for Senior Scholarship: shall be the Civil Service Junior examination.” The inspectors added that they hat also considered the question of raising the age of candidates for the junioi scholarships, but had no recommendation to make in that direction. The report was adopted. A Nsvv Reader. The chief inspector (Mr W. A. Bah lantyne) reported that the committee set up by the Board to considci the question of adopting a new mis cellaneous reader, recommended tha the “Pacific Reader” be used in placi of the “Imperial Reader.” In, answer to the chairman, the in specter said that local booksellers stocks of the “imperial Reader” bac become depleted, and they complainec that they could not replneish them The book was out of date and out o print. Notification was received from tin Inspector-General of Schools that i was proposed to amend immediately the regulations relating to probation ers in such a way as to provide for the appointment of one prohationei for each eight hundred or part of eight hundred pupils in yearly average at tendance in the district, in lieu of om probationer for each twelve hundret or part of twelve hundred as at present. The Board will he at liberty accordingly, to arrange appointments for the coming year on the amended basis. Teachers’ Residences. The Secretary for Education conveyed the regret of the Minister that in view of the pressure on the vote foi school buildings he had had to postpone for six months consideration ot applications for the improvement ol teachers’ residences. General. The Inspector-General of Schools notified that a grant not exceeding £201) would be available for the yeai ending March 31st, 191-1, for the training of nncertilicated teachers on certain lines.

The Education Department intimated that the Department of Agriculture was prepared to entertain applications from Education Hoards 'for a suppß of a limited number of buds and grafts to schools at which a special feature was made of nursery work, under the supervision and direction of an itinerant instructor iu agriculture.

Mrs Winthrop, head teacher at Ma tau, was granted leave to remain at that school, instead of transferring t< Tahora.

In his monthly report (states the News) the technical director (Mr A. Cray) recommended that the usual bonuses be voted to Mr Tyrcr (superintendent of technical classes at St rat ford), and Mr Sandford (supervisor at New Plymouth), and that the caretaker receive an increase in salary.
