THE BUTCHERS’ STRIKE. (By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (United Press Association.) Sydney, December 15. The employees in tho butchers shops yesterday gave the employers a week’s notice. They intimated that they were open to re engagement, but only on the understanding that there would be no work after six o clock on Saturdays.
TELEGRAPHISTS’ G RIEVANCE. Sydney, December 15. The position in connection with the telegraphists’ grievance against broken shifts contained in the new scheme of staff hours is unaltered. The Federal Government has decided that the scheme must operate on Monday morning. The telegraphists say that there will be a fight to a finish. Melbourne, December 15.
A mooting of telegraphists will be held on Monday night to consider developments in Sydney. Sydney, December 16. The new schedule of hours for telegraphists comes into force at eight o’clock this morning. The men say they will be working, but will continue on the old hours. Whatever tho developments, messages for New Zealand will possibly be able to reach the La Perouse cable station from whence the Eastern Extension Company’s operators will transmit.
REFERRED TO ARBITRATION. (Received 12.5 p.m.) Sydney, December 16. A big meeting of telegraphists decided to work under the now schedule for one week, pending representation to Mr. Fisher, with a view to having the matters in dispute submitted to arbitration at tho earliest possible moment.
INDUSTRIAL CORPORATION. (Per Press Association.) Christchurch, December 15. The Canterbury Industrial Association has resolved to submit the following remits to the Industrial Corporation at Wellington:—(l) That an amendment should be made to the Arbitration Act, with a view to simplifying the procedure in obtaining a Dominion award; (2) that the various industrial associations in New Zealand should be given an opportunity of considering any alterations, additions or amendments to the Tariff Act, and that the Minister of Customs should be asked to consult the Industrial Corporation, as being peculiarly fitted to consider such amendments.
