THE STAR OF CANADA.
THE LIGHTERAGE CHARGES
(Per Press Association.) Wellington, December 13. Justice Chapman to-day delivered judgment in the Star of Canada salvage action. Evidence was heard at Gisborne. The Tysor line and John Hart (master of the Star of Canada) were plaintiffs and the Gisborne Sheep Farmers’ Frozen Meat Company wore the defendants. The claim was for £qß24 and interest, the amount of alleged overcharge for lighterage in connection with salvaging the frozen meat from the stranded steamer Star of Canada. The total amount paid for lighterage was £8363, and plaintiffs claimed that the amount, according to Gisborne rates, should have been £2539.- His Honor decided that the defendant company were entitled to £3-100 for the work of lightering and general salvaging of cargo. In assesing this amount, His Honor considered the interest accruing on the larger sum paid. Judgment, would be for plaintiffs for £4963 19s 6d with costs.
