The Stratford Evening Post. WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED THE EGMONT SETTLER. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 13, 1912. CANADA AND THE STATES.

The statement made in some quarters that Canada is rapidly becoming Americanised, is warmly contradicted from within, though on the other hand those ' who maintain that it is so have grounds to go upon. It is pointed out that in intonation and accent in speaking the inhabitant of the country lying on the Canadian side of the boundary in North America is almbst indistinguishable from an inhabitant of the country of the United States’ side of the frontier. The chief density of the 1 Canadian population lies close to the boundary, so that a large proportion! of Canadians, in climate and environment, experience conditions very similar to those by which the United States citizens in the adjoining States are moulded. Through railroads bind the two countries, and the constant

influx of United States citizens to I Canada to take up the cheap lands now open, still further levels the hitherto existing difference between the two peoples by further blending, llaj cial origin, it is again pointed out, is very largely common, and the same j characteristics, energy, shrewdness, and the desire and ability to subdue nature, and to utilise her forces for the advantage of humanity, are found in the inhabitants of both great countries. The widely differing political institutions, are of course, great points of cleavage, hut it is asked with a good deal of reason how long a community of eight million people can resist the enormous attractive force of a contiguous nation of nearly one hundred million ! J The overwhelming defeat of Sir Wilfrid Lanrier’s Government on the issue of reciprocity between Canada and the United States has been hold to show that Canada will not consent to lie absorbed by her powerful neighbour, but will she always maintain this attitude of independence ?
