(By Cicero.) Lord Lupin showed a great dash of pace at Feifding, and his name appears amongst the acceptors at Rangitikei. F. J). Jones was offered the position of first horseman to Sir 0. Clifford, but refused, preferring to be a free lance.

The steeplechaser Continuance arrived back in the Dominion on Friday last after his successful trip to Australia. As the son of Sabretache is not very sound, it is the intention of his owner to fire him, afterwards turning him out for- a lengthy spell. The party, behind St. Toney backed that gelding for a lot of money on the second day at Woodville, but failed to get a fair run, as the big bay putting his foot in a hole wrenched his fetlock, and pulled up very lame. Recipe is amongst the unsound brigade, the seat of trouble being the hind quarter. By the way, Mr Morpe appears to have taken a big risk in Jetting the Stepniak gelding in at 7.12 at the Taranaki meeting. In his last start Recipe carried 7.12 and defeated a very strong field of sixteen horses, and was subsequently handicapped at 8.13 for his next nomination. I may mention that Galtee was unplaced in the above-mentioned race, carrying 6.9, and at,’,1£) nouthdy, asked to concede Recipe three pounds. Lucerne got rather a bad passage in the welter on the first day of the Woodville meeting. With a better run she had no difficulty in winning her race on the second day. Manawhakakaha’s owner having decided on a change of trainers, this horse will in future be trained by J. Barlow. Cordon Rouge’s son was very successful when under thata careful trainer, R. Brough, and it remains to be seen whether the change of trainers was a wise move.

The Taranaki-owned Patronale lias accepted for Rangitikei, and is reported to be well. The roan son of Patronus is a useful sort. 7 The Rangitikei Club have received a good response from owners for their spring fixture, and all that is now required to make the meeting an unqualified success is good weather. Bollin on his best form is nicely handicapped in the Ohakea Hurdles. Rangiatana on Feilding form will start favourite in the Scott Memorial. Chief Marshall is not overburdened for a good horse in the Parewonui Hurdles, although Moahau ran well at Feilding. Ecloque was greatly fancied by iris' connections for Feilding, but was not started on account of the bad condition of the course. He appears nicely treated in the Makowhia Welter, but will have to be at his very best to beat Ngatimaru, should the latter start. 1 'i'he Cup has attracted the good field of ten. The connections of Master Laddo are very confident, whilst Alona as a representative of the powerful Porirua Stable is entitled to respect. A number of really first-class sprinters have accepted for the Carnarvon Hack Race. Lady Louise, Missile, and Lord Lupin should provide a good race. it is an open secret that Allure was unlucky to lose at Feilding, and is given an excellent chance in the Pukenui Welter to make amends for that defeat.

Stratford was especially well represented at the Woodville meeting last week, the colours of three local owners being unfurled, and no less than six Stratford horses sporting silk. They were Mr Sidney Pitt’s Red Lupin, Master Tupuhi and Lien fern ; Mr ,J, R. L. Stanford’s St. Toney and Bercola; and Dr. Paget’s Lucerne. The latter started an actual favourite on both days of the meeting and but for a very bad passage and much bumping at the start'on the first day would have earned two winning -brackets. On the second day the mare was not interfered with and won handsomely. Mr Stanford’s pair both gained second places, St. Toney missing tlie stake in one race by a nose nd running with bad luck on the second day. Mr Pitt was not at all in luck, and his only place at tire meeting was a third with Red Lupin. Visitors were made very welcome at Woodville and received much hospitable treatment at the hands of the secretary (Mr Gothard), and the officials of' the Club. As it deserves 1 his Club grows in popularity with the racing public. Some excellent racing was witnessed and the contest each day between Sir Solo and Master Laddo ws well worth witnessing. Of course (as at all meetings) there wore things that ought not to have been, and until the Stipendiary gets solidly to work this is bound to be. But, generally speaking, for good management and good racing Woodville takes a high place.

Messrs Marett and Fox-, who are to control the totalisator at the forthcoming meeting of the Stratford Racv ing Club, had charge of the machine at the Woodville meeting and handled a lot of money with ease. Their arrangements are excellent and although the turnover increased from £l-5.700

to £24,000 for the mooting—as much as £I6BO being invested on one race—there was no need for any would-be investor to be shut out, unless he fell asleep altogether.
