TITANIC RELIEF.
22G9 CLAIMANTS. Details of the scheme for the allocation of the £476,780 subscribed for the Titanic victims were made public at a recent meeting of the Mansion House Committee of the. Titanic Relief Fund. It was reported that altogether there were 2296 claimants, and particulars of these may be summarised as follows:
The sub-committee stated that the broad principle of the scale adopted was to give half wages to the widow of a victim; and they considered that to assure to a widow half of her hueband’s earnings for the rest of her life was certainly generous treatment. She would forfeit the allowance on remarriage. In respect to children, it was proposed to allow 3s 6d a week for one child, 5s 6d for two, 7s for three, 8s 6d for four, and 10s 6d for live or over; slightly decreased in the case of widows of men earning from £SO to £IOO a year. In order to maintain the allowance at the high rate proposed, the sub-committee reported'. they had found it necessary to take into corlsideration any assistance received by the widows and relatives by way of ■vtorktnen’s compensation, insurance moneys 'over £IOO, or any private income. These they rated at. 4 per cent. Titus, if a widow received £3OO compensation, that would be treated as 5s a week, and 5s a week would he deducted from the scale of allowance. The sub-committee went on to- say: “The question would probably be asked, How does the treatment ’of the crew compare with the treatment of the officers? The widow of an officer earning £250 a year and over received a maximum of £2 a week, which was only two-fifths of the lowest.salary her husband would have earned, whereas in the case of an ordinary member of the crew earning £75 a year, the widow alone received 15s a week, a little over half the wages earned by her husband, in addition to which she received a special allowance in respect of each child.”
It was estimated that £140,000 would cover; all passenger claims. British and fcjreign,' and it was said that this amount would allow for each British passenger a sum equal to the average allotted in respect of a crew claim. i ■ ' >J ■' The report was adopted.
