His Honour Sir Robert Stout, Chief Justice, was sworn in on Tuesday morning as Administrator of the Goyernment. Te Rangihiroa (Dr. Buck, M.P.), and Mrs. Buck left Auckland by the Tofua on a tour of the Islands. Mr. A. J. Jury, recently of Waitara, has, it is understood', purchased the lease of the Coronation Hotel, Eltham, from Mr. 0. Potts. Mr. G. Hunter, M.P. for Waipawa, has (states a Danneyirke wire) opened the Booth Memorial Fund in this district with a donation of £IOO. Sir Edgar Vincent has been | appointed chairman of the Empire Commission, Lord Morley retiring on the ground of ill-health. Sir Alfred Bateman has been appointed a member. The Hon. W. F. Massey, Prime Minister, left Wellington last evening for Lawrence, to attend the banquet to the Hon. J. Allen. Mr. Massey expects to visit Auckland again about the New Year. 1 ■ Miss Helen Gladstone, the youngest daughter of the great Liberal statesman, who, after twelve years of active work at the Woman's University Settlement at Southwark, has retired to the family home at Hawarden, widen she left after her father’s death.; Miss Gladstone is a graduate of the Newnham,College. Mrs. Beer, wife of Mr William Beer, Manutahi, passed away at the Patea Hospital on Tuesday, at the age of Bb, after a short illness, supervening on influenza. With her husband the deceased lady settled in Manutahi over thirty years ago, having come direct from" Deal, Kent, England.
The Anglican Dishop of North Queensland (Dr. Frodsham), whose resignation of the See takes effect in March, 1913, has found it desirable to get relief from his responsibilities before the end of the year. The citizens of Townville have decided to give him a public send-off. This is likely to take place on December 14. The Townsville committee to arrange for the bishop’s send off consists of two Homan Catholics, a Presbyterian, and a Methodist. Mr. A. J. Poynton-succeeds Mr. A. D. Thomson at Palmerston North, the latter having been appointed Public Service Commissioner, and until he takes up his new duties on January Ist will retain his present position in the Treasury. Mr. Poynton practised the legal profession in Wellington from 1891 to 1895, when he was appointed Stipendiary Magistrate at Invercargill, a position which lie held for five years. He was a member of the Commission which in 1898 reorganised the whole police force. For ten years ho occupied the position of Public Trustee, and be has also acted as Auditor-General during the illness of Mr. Warburton. Mr. Poynton was appointed Secretary of the Treasury and head of the Advances Board nearly threo years ago.
