WHANGAMOMORA NOTES.
(From our own Correspondent;)
The roads are now in good order and the farmers are very busy getting the wool off and away to catch the early markets. Farmers arc very optimistic about the wool returns tin's year, the clips being, generally speaking, heavier and cleaner than last year.
. The Loan and Mercantile Company hold their spring sale at Kohuratahi on Friday. There was a good yarding and though the selling was slow, some good prices were realised. The members of the above firm came right to Whanga by motor car, this being the first car through this season. Mr E. C. Robinson, County Engineer, came in the following day on his motor cycle. A plain and fancy dress ball was. held at Kohuratahi on Friday last, and proved an unqualified success. A goodly number journeyed from Whanga and they had a thorough good time. I cannot here go into detail about the fancy dresses, but they were a the fancy dresses, "but, they were a very pleasing picture and did Kohuratahi • credit. The supper and music arrangements were carried out in firstclass style.
The Whanga Medical Association’s rules and by-laws, which were submitted to the Chief Registrar for endorsement, have been accepted and we now rejoice in the. name of “Whangamomona Medical Association, Incorporated,” and everything is in order for the next move—to secure the doctor for our district.
Mr Coxheacl, senior, has been paying his old friends here a short visit. .
The Whanga mail coach, which lias clone duty between here and Stratford for so many is to bo sent out to the latter town this week to be sold. The train has now taken the coach’s business, but the memory of the good old days and the mail coach will.be for a long time green with W llanga residents. Another sacrifice on the Altar of Progress! A progressive euchre party and dance was held here on Saturday night when there was a large attendance. Everything went smoothly and onjoyably. The first prize for ladies went to Miss B. Dean and that for gentlemen to Mr Graham. Another evening is to be held in about a fortnight’s time. Messrs Hodder and Tolley, of Palmerston North, have presented a cup for competition among members of the new Putikituna llifle Club. This club was only formed this season, but members are most enthusiastic and bid fair to rank high as a country, club.
We have be<tn visited lately by several land agents and land buyers, and some sales are reported. ' To-night the friends of Mr H. E. Archer tender him a ‘farey/ell social evening. Mr .Archer is leaving tomorrow to take 7 the proprietorship of a hotel in Wanganui district.
The Public Works have been putting off a goodly number of men from the faihtay WorkfighWh'; but 'Many ’of'them are finding employment on the roads or with the settlers. During the summer there will*'"fie plenty''of demand for labour here/ 1 ,
Mr Goldsworthy; seed representative fnr Mr Newton King, met with a slight accident last week in a peculiar way. fie was riding alongside another horseman when the latter’s mount kicked out and struck Mr Goldsworthy on the shin, giving; it a painful graze and bruising it, severely:
The Debating Society held a meeting on Wednesday night, the subject being “The Totalisator: should it be retained or abolished?” Mr Marsh .supported by Messrs Rouse and Fawkner declared for the “tote,” and Mr A. Collingwood, supported by Messrs Alyward and McMeekin, declared against it. After an interesting and humorous debate, Mr Marsh’s side won on the popular vote. The next debate, “Should Bachelors bo taxed?” takes place next week. The news of the death of Mr W. Abbott was received here with very general regret, and several friends journeyed to Stratford to pay their last tribute to one who, while resident here, made many fast friends and no enemies.
