Despite all the difficulties to be surmounted yesterday, those arising from the exigencies of a first day as well as the unexpected which followed in the wake of the weather, —the Show went through without, any serious hitch. Judging was continued without intermission until after 4 o’clock, after which the main ring wore a deserted look, but 'the dogs and home industries sections were completed inside an hour.
The side-shows got going during the afternoon, and the various attractions appeared to secure a fair amount of patronage. To-day, however, is their harvest time, and those who come from back of Whanga. will be seen cheek by jowl with their cousins nearer town in the vicinity of the sights.. . Regarding the butter-fat competition, Mr E. 1). Harknees’s cow' put up a great record. In the' words of a prominent dairyman: “Over lllbs of butter-fat! My' she has shown the w r ay to the Dominion!” By the win, Mr Harkness becomes the possessor of Messrs C. and E. Jackson’s silver cup, valued at eight guineas, which had to be won twice in succession.' She was second in 1910, and by her wins in 1911 and this year has put up a record to bb proud of. The Stratford Brass Band was present during the afternoon under Conductor Marshall, and gave a number of selections,! and this afternoon, also, the Band will be found to be nob the least pleasing among the varieties.
