Mr. Kennington was elected chairman of tho-Waitara City Council, vice Mr. Elliott, who did not seek re-elec-tion.
Mr. Athol Meredith was re-elected chairman of the Whangarnomona County Council. Mr. J. T. Quinn was yesterday reelected as chairman of the Elcham County Council. Mrs. William Derrett, late of Whenuakura, near Patea, died in Auckland on Monday last. Mr. Harold Beauchamp has been appointed a director of the Bank of New Zealand, in "place of Mr. J. B. Reid, who has resigned.
Civil Service Commissioners under the Act passed last session have been appointed as follows: — Messrs. Donald Robertson, 1.5.0., Secretary to tho Post Office (Chief Commissioner); Robert Triggs, for many years in the New Zealand Railways Department, and now chief accountant in thtePostmas-ter-General Department ofJßie Australian Commonwealth, ana A, D. Thomson. S.M., at Palmerston North.
Sir Matthew Henry Davies, all exSpeaker of the Victorian Legislative Assembly, is dead. The deceased was born at Geelong 62 years ago. He,was educated for the law, and adrri ted a solicitor in 1875. He was Mayor of P rah ran in the ’Bo’s. He entered Parliament in 18S3, was Minister without portfolio from 1886 to 1837, and Speaker from 1887 to 1892, when he retired. Sir Matthew presented £IO,OOO to public institutions in' commemoration of Queen Victoria’s jubilee reign (1887). ,
