SPORTING NOTES.
(By Cicero.)
Owners Jiave favoured the Fcilding Cup with great acceptances for tin ;r fixture, winch opens on Saturday. Crown Pearl will be very “hot” in tne Flying. Mend ip and Brown Owl should make the St.- Andrew’s Hand’ cap interesting. Golden Loop on
Riccarton form will carry a lot of money in the Spring Hurdles, timothy, who is going well, and Moanan will meet to fight, their Waterloo battle over again in the Waituna Hurdles.
Patriotic’s name appears at-nag the acceptors for the Kiwitea- Welter. The presence of Suratura, Royil Simon,, and Lockwood should make a good race in the Fitzroy Hack, the best known of those left, in the Aoringl Trial Plate. A large number have made the final payment for the bedding Stakes. Nightwatch appears to stand out as best. The Stratford owned Corotiet-Ts.ru Ran colt trained by Dick Brough, is shaping a little better in bis work, and may be useful later on. Black Northern, who has lately bci-n in use as a stock horse, was recently
represented by Mr McKenzie. Vhoat. six months ago Mr Montgomerie gave Mr McKenzie 400 guineas for the son of Salvadan, but he was so c.n> gusted at the black gelding’s betiaviour that ho accepted 100 guineas for
him. Lucerne still continues to handle herself well at Egmont. She will he a runner at Woodville next week, and will probably be ridden by her owner, in the welter. ✓ Manawakaha should be all the better for his racing at Feilding, and should take some beating in the minor events at the Auckland Summer meeting, which will be his next engagement after the first-named meeting. Up to the present, two of the three stipendiary stewards have been uppointed by the committee, and it is a certainty that they will start their duties at the Christmas meetings. , The “heads” will not hear of the defeat of Ilrown Owl in the SC Andrew’s at Feilding. She is at a ridiculous price at present. J)r King, the Auckland vet., recently fired ,Taskmaster and Counterfeit for Sir G. Clifford. It was intended to retire the latter to the stud, hut on reconsideration Treadmill s daughter is to he given another chance. Miscount, another horse of note, was also fired by Dr. King iecently. Plantation is rather sore at present, and may not make the < trip to Feilding. . . , , p Patriotic "gftulg’ particularly welt.. On Saturday morning ho proved too good for Mendip and Manawakaha, getting to the end of toe eight furlongs in 1.4 G on the sand tiack. Idle name of The Dodger appears among the acceptances at Feilding, hut it is doubtful whether the CordonRouge gelding is forward enough ho do himself justice. „ , F. E. Jones, who has been hist horseman to Sir G. Clifford for a number of years, recently severed his connection with that stable. It is iu m.oured that a well known Taranaki horseman made an application for ill. position, but was promptly turned down.” -
