ACCIDENTS & FATALITIES.
SUDDEN DEATH OF A PRIEST. (P©r Press Association.) Wellington, November 21. Rev. Father C. J. Venning, S.M., met with a motor-cycle accident this evening at 5.15, and succumbed to his injuries at 9.50 p.tn. Father Venning was turning the corner of Hill street and Guddford Terrace on his machine, when he seemed to lose control and it dashed into a fence. In the recoil he was heavily thrown with the machine on top of him. Mr W. G. Riddel, S.M., and Mrs Riddel were spectators of the accident. It was. found tnat Father Venning had sustained concussion of the brain and a fracture of the skull. Dr. Pattic and Dr. Martin were called in, but held out little hope, and deceased passed away a few hours later. He appeared to regain consciousness as the last rites were being administered by the Rev. Fathers at the Presbytery, Hill street. Father Venning was 33 years old and a native of Tim am, being a son of Mr John Venning, of that town. He studied at St. Patrick’s College, Wellington, and at St. Mary’s Scholastieate, Mcanee, Hawke’s Ray, being ordained in 1903. For some time he was on the staff of St. Patrick’s College. He then worked in various parishes in the Wellington Archdiocese. He was a man of tireless energy, and did good work for the St. Vincent de Paul Society and Mission and rescue vork generally.
ACCIDENT ON THE RAILWAY. Rotorua, November 21. Guard Robinson, while shunting at Mamakn yesterday, had his w 1 vis crushed between a truck and the pbitform. He was brought to the .sanatorium. DIED IN THE RUSH. Invercargill, Novom >or 21. The body of an old age pensioner named Thomas Ladd, aged 6.', was found in Cruickshank’s Bush, two miles from town. He had left his home on October 8, and ab .'Hurts to trace him failed. The •;ody was m an advanced state of decomposition, but was identified by papers in the pocket of the clothes. A GIG ACCIDENT. Christchurch, November 21. An inquest, was held to-day touching the death, of George Alloway, wim was injured in a trap accident mar Ashley Bridge on November 12. The police statement was that deceased was in the gig and was thrown out w hei the horse" hoi ted. A verdict if accidental death was returned.
