HAWERA A. AND P. SHOW.
PEOPLE’S DAY,
AN EXCELLENT ATTENDANCE
It must have been very gratifying to the officials of the Egmont Agricultural A. and P. Association that the attendance on People’s Day yesterday, should have created a record. The takings yesterday at the ' gate were ■£2oo, though the charge was but one shilling, and were much in advance of the previous year when 2s was charged. The fine- grounds were crowded right throughout the day with a throng of makers, intent on securing a maximum of enjoyment from the popular summer fixture. Towards 2 p.m., the side-shows and cattle pens were deserted, while from every vantage point faces were turned towards the ring, where the pick of Taranaki’s cattle and horses paraded in all the cattle and horses paraded in. all their magnificence. Afterwards the jumping competitions were the big attraction, some excellent performances being put up. LOCAL SUCCESSES. In the Milch Cows there were splendid entries for the best dairy cow, and the first prize and championship went to last year’s winner, J. C. Montefinre’s Joan, a beautiful Jersey-Ayr-sliire, which the judge greatly admired. This cow was bred by Mr R. F. Cornwall, of New Plymouth, and is from a pedigree Ayrshire cow by a pedigree ‘ Jersey bull. The merit in her performance can better be judged from the fact that she beat the Christchurch champion, Bilbery X., which was sold for 200 guineas, and R. J. Linn’s Rita, which had to bo content with third place. N. Y. Nowell’s Perfection, winner in the butter-fat and casein competitions, was second. Fred Mills (Tokaora), with Judith, gained first place for three-year-old heifers, F. C. Higginson be’ng second and R. J. Linn’s Belvedere Rose third.
Among the horses the performance© of Mr E. Mason’s Zanzibar stand right out. His successes included best weight-carrying cob, best troop horse, light harness horse under 15.2, light harness horse shown in harness, ditto driven by lady, and novice class, and the final carrying off the Association’s championship. Miss Ethel Abbott secured" a third prize with Micky, in the polo pony class, and for the buggy pony event. Mr E. Jacakson got a second prize with Barney, Mr F. W. White (Eltham), securing the first prize with Belle.
With regard to the horses generally, the judges had a word of commemendation for the yearling thoroughbreds, which they described as a strong class of good quality, and which would compare favourably with the exhibits in similar classes at other shows. A like comment was passed in reference to the yearlings in the coaching and light harness classes. As regarded ponies, they said the breeding classes were just fair, but the, two classes, for ponies, ridden by boys or girls, were good, strong ones both numerically and in point of quality, there being several very nice ponies and excellent movers amongst them. COMPETITIONS. The competitions attracted much interest and were certainly exceedingly attractive. Bonganui fell, and, in falling, turned a complete somersault, the rider having an almost miraculous escape. The results were:— Wire Jumping.—Brewer’s Hawera I, Patterson’s Haerc 2, Morrissey’s Hacrelin 3. T. Jones was awarded the prize for best rider. Leaning.—Monro’s Laalefos I, Hawera 2, Haerc 3.
