WORKERS’ DWELLINGS.

Several workers of Stratford have realised that the benefits of the Workers’ Dwelling Act would be very beneficial to those desirous of becoming their own landlord. Last 'week members of the Board met in Stratford at the request of six applicants, and Messrs Lomas (Supt. of Labour), Mr Bullard (Commissioner of Lands), Mr Temple (Government Architect) in conjunction with Mr Slaughter, of New Plymouth, inspected several blocks of land, two of which have been recommended to the Government for purchase, On one block a dozen houses coiitf be erected, and on the other bloWfourteen dwellings. Mr Slaughter will be in Stratford on Friday evening, when he will have 20 to 25 designs of 3,4, 5, and 6-roomed dwellings with their approximate cost of erection. Any person being landless under the meaning the Workers Dwelling Act will have the opportunity of being a prospective land holder. The terms of the Government are very reasonable, being as follows: On app.ication £lO deposit, when the dwelling is erected the total cost of ground, drainage and erection is added up, and then the payments are taken as rent extending over 25 years; or an applicant can pay off the principal in multiples of £7, or they can have the option of purchasing at_ any time. A three-roomed house works out at approximately 7s 6d per week; fourroomed, about 8s; five-roomed, 9s 6:1; and six-roomed, at 11s. These houses are built on modern and hygene principles, being provided with hot and cold service, bath, pantry, scullery, washhouse and outhouses as may be required. The only cost is the actual transfer foes. The Mayor (Mr W. P. Kirkwood) has placed the Borough Council Chambers at the disposal of the applicants to choose and inspect the plans, and the convener (Mr T. J. Ladd) will be in attendance at 7.15 p.m. on Friday, when he will be pleased to give intending applicants any further information required. i
