DAYLIGHT SAVING.
THOSE PETITIONS AGAIN
Business men who are not actively interested iu the daylight saving petitions are enjoying the many ridiculous situations created by those citizens who used their signatures indiscriihinately. The Council discussed the matter last night, and various comments were made. ■Messrs R. 1). Lowers and A. H. O’Leary waited on the Council and respectfully urged that the contradictory petitions before the Council be cancelled in order to allow them to put. one in. The petition they would be putting in would favour opening at 7.30 a.m. and closing at 5.30 p.m. in the summer, opening at 8' a.m. and closing at 5.30 in the winter, 12.30 p.m. closing on weekly half-holiday in summer and 1 o’clock in winter, Saturday nights 9 o’clock closing. The Mayor said the petitions would certainly be cancelled as they were not in order, retailers have in some cases signed both petitions, which made the position very contradictory indeed. I may say that there is one petition from the grocers’ alone. This will be forwarded on. The deputation then withdrew. Councillor King, when the matter was again before the Council: I can’t, understand any body of men acting like this. They knew what they were signing, but they don’t seem to know their own minds from One minute to another. Councillor McAllister: It’s a tribute to the persuasive powers of the men who took the petitions round. It was then decided not to forward the contradictory petitions, but to send to the Minister the grocers’ petition, asking that, in the months from April to Oct. inclusive shops be open from 8 a.m. to 5.30 p.m., with one o’clock closing on Thursdays, and 7.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. in the remaining months, with 12.30 closing on Thursdays.
