TRAGEDIES IN SYDNEY.
SWEETHEARTS AND POISON. Sydney, November 18. A tragedy occlirred at Waverley today. The body of a girl named Hilda Gowan was found in the park with two lysol ’ bottles alongside it. George Veitch, aged 18, was also found lying it home in a dangerous condition from lysol poisoning. He informed the police that he and the girl were sweethearts and quarrelled. They decided to poison themselves, and after praying, swallowed the poison. The girl lied, and he crawled home. Veitch, in his depositions, states that he drank the lysol first, and became oblivious. The next thing ho ronembered was finding himself in the hospital. He, has no recollection of ,vhat became of the girl. The doctor Considers it improbable that anyone in Veitch’s condition could reach home done. His sister says that she heard two sharp rings at the door-bell, and uiswering it, found her brother collapsed in the doorway. It was impossible for him to have rung, but he had ieen assisted home. A medical exuminition of the girl Gowan shows that die took a big dose, but indicated nodiing that could explain the tragedy.
