MISCELLANEOUS CABLES.
Twenty thousand acres of grass have been destroyed by bush fires in the Moutamein district, New South Wales. A gun burst at Shoeburyness (England), and fragments fic-w throe miles away. Eighteen people wore injured, six seriously. A Paris cable states that Augusten Max, a banker, at Ruelafictte, has confessed to embezzling and losing his clients’ money amounting to £400,000 by speculation in copper mines in an experiment for nickel extraction. The desire has been expressed in the Yokohama Chamber of Commerce that the Japanese-Australian mail service- should bo extended to Adelaide and New Zealand, and made fortnightly instead of monthly as at present. At a meeting pf miners at Newcastle (N.S.W.), it was resolved to continue work until the executive and joint committees receive every opportunity to settle their grievances.
