The Stratford Evening Post. WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED THE EGMONT SETTLER. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 1912. EUROPE’S PROBLEM.
Bulgaria and her allies in their successes against Turkey are likely to set Europe a problem of greater difficulty to solve than the Balkan question has even hitherto proved. The marked successes of the Bulgarian forces must almost surely act as a great stimulus to Slav aspirations in other lands, where the Slav element forms either a preponderating part of the population or the very basis of that nation. It is pointed out by more than one authority that the Slavs in Russia were strongly sympathetic towards Bulgaria and resentful of the latter’s oppressions at Turkey’s hands long before the actual outbreak of the present hostilities. Should the Russian Slavs break out and decide to theirshrdluaa break out and decide to render assistance to their brethren in Bulgaria in the event of the Powers in their united wisdom, and diplomacy deciding to restrain the victors from enjoying the full fruits of their victory, Europe may witness a tremendous upheaval. The long condonation of Turkey’s excesses and the failure to take any real and effective measures to better Turkish misrule, has left the (treat Powers in a very difficult place and unless the statesmen of the two great racial groups which comprise the nations vitally interested and affected can restrain their peoples, Europe may be plunged into a conflict so far-reaching and terrible that
it will be impossible for the AngloSaxon nations to keep clear of it. King Nicholas of Montenegro lias declared that the allies will settle thenaffairs alone but that their victories would not make them forget to accommodate their wishes to the general European situation.
