JERSEY CATTLE BREEDERS.

MEETING AT PALMERSTON. A meeting of the Council 6f the New Zealand Jersey Cattle Breeders’ Association was held on Thursday. Present: Messrs W. M. Tapp (Auckland), chairman ■ R. J. Linn (Normanhy), J. A. McCrea (Stony Creek), F.E. Watson (Palmerston North), A. H. Hal com he (Urenui), W. Y. Harkness (Tariki), W. H. Booth (Carterton), and J. C. Lane (secretary). A report was made on the progress 1 of the semi-official tost of Jersey pedigree stock under the Dairy Division, Department of Agriculture, there being over 120 entries up to the present.

The allotment of three 17-guinea sterling silver trophies for competition at the Hamilton, Stratford and Auckland A. and P. Shows was confirmed, and the selection of the same was left with the secretary and Mr J. A. McCrea. New members elected were as follows : Mrs Annie Barks and Son (Kiwitea), C. E. Chisnall (Richmond, Nelson), Egraont Dickie (Waverley), J. L. Hanna (Paeroa), Frank Mourie (Manaia), Miss H. E. Maclean (Aorangi), T. E. Robinson (Whangarata), Jacob Therkleson (Tariki), G. lb Yates (Parengarenga). Mr I). Cuddie, Director of Dairy Produce, attended in reference to semiofficial test, and cows attending shows. The matter of procuring a standard milk scale for the weighing of milk in all official milk tests was discussed, and it was decided to order some for ise by the Association. A letter was received from, the franklin A. and P. Association applying for a trophy for competition.— Trophies for this year have been arranged. Application was held over for '.onsideration till next year.

The question of selling grade Jersey hulls was considered on a remit from Stratford branch as follows:—“That the attention of the Council be drawn lo the fact that a number of members of the /Association are breeding grade Jersey bulls and selling them as such, ivliich practice is very detrimental to the Jersey breed, and that the Association be asked to devise .some means lo stop the practice.”—Resolved that ■1 circular be sent to each member on Hie lines of the resolution and that Ibis Council’s disapproval of the practice be recorded and notified in the circular.

In reference to the suggestion from the Association to the A. and P. Aseoeiations that, as a means of education in Jersey classes, a young Jersey breeder accompany the Jersey judge while judging the Hamilton, Stratford and Auckland Associations wrote their approval of the idea. In reference to the proposed alteration of rules, it was resolved that local branches be requested to send in suggestions by December Ist. The following was added to the Herd Book rules: “Thlit the legal represen-

tative of any deceased member may, provided the subscription of 21s is paid, within one year after his or her death, register at member’s rates or transfer any animal owned by said member at time of his or her decca.se, or that may be dropped within said year from animals so owned.”

On the motion of the President it was resolved to submit the following to the Minister of Agriculture: “Seeing the economic production of butterfat is the fundamental principle of successful dairying the Council of the New Zealand Jersey Cattle Breeder"’ Association ask the Minister of Agriculture to arrange that the Department in charge of the Experimental Farms institute a system of records for purebred dairy stock, whereby not only a milk and butter-fat record is kept, but also the cost of keep and the class of food consumed is stated. That the details be published in the journal of the Department of Agriculture.”

Of the Association’s Herd Book is in the printer’s hands for publication, and will comprise 457 bulk, 481 cows, and heifers. At June 30th, 1912, the total number of registered pedigree Jersey stock in. the Dominion was 1806 bulls, 2484 cows.

The following official tests for seven days were received and certified to by the usual sworn affidavits from the supervisors and testers: —Air P. C. Anderson’s (Carterton) “Lady Garibaldi,” aged 2 years 9 months, calved June 10th, 1912, tested September 27th to Oct. stb, 1912, result 2221 b milk, test 5.2, ll.Sllbs butter-fat. Air F. S. Mcßae’s (Stony Creek) cow “Charm,” age 4 years, calved September 9tli, 1912, tested October 10th to 16th, 1912, .result 2901bs milk, test 5.4, IS.GGOIbs butter fat.
