WRECK OF THE HAWERA.

The accident happened while the steamer was entering the harbour; The Hawera had a full cargo, which included a number of transhipments from Lyttelton. The vessel is now high and dry at low water on the eastern side of the breakwater, and is resting on a hard, sandy bottom. i On Saturday and Sunday a good portion of the cargo was landed, but both holds are full of water at high tide. The exact nature of the injuries cannot ho ascertained until all the cargo has been removed, and. a thorough examination of the hull made. It is understood by' those competent to speak that the back of the vessel may he broken. If this is so she may become a total wreck. Tier stem was smashed asunder 7ft. downwards, and there is a large gaping hole on the starboard side 6ft from the how to midship. The accident is unfortunate for the owners, the South Taranaki Shipping Company, as the vessel was one of the latest additions to the fleet.
