A PRISONER’S ADVENTURE.
(Per Press Association.) Whangarei October 28. The man Huston, who escaped from the Hukurangi ■ police station on Thursday, was recaptured by Constable Armstrong, assisted by a civilian named Williams, at 9 o’clock last night between Tainarere and Opua. It was elicited that Huston purchased a fishing line .and hooks from a store at Kamakama, previous to which he had stolen some carpenter’s tools, which were found in his possession, and the owner of which is unknown. It Was his intention to get aboard a boat as ship’s carpenter. The first clue to bis whereabouts was obtained from bis calling at a gum-dig-gor’s hut at Hukerunui. After leaving Kawakawa he lit a fire at a brick kiln, hastily decamping when observed by three young men, who communicated with the police. He was overtaken near the seaboard, and submitted without resistance. He was brought to Whangarei to-day, and will be charged with burglary and the theft of tools and with breaking gaol. A peculiar coincidence that led to the police being in the vicinity was that an immigrant of precisely the same description was being traced, but was able to satisfy the police, who • went to arrest him at Motatau. Huston has followed the main road from Hikurangi to Opua, dodging into side scrub to avoid detection from passing traffic, and has travelled nearly forty miles before being recaptured.
