TUESDAY, OCTOBER 22. LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. (Per Press Association.! Wellington, October 22. The Council met at 2.30 p.m. Public Service Bill. The Public Service Bill was recommitted for the purpose cf making a number of amendments, ail of winch were of a technical character, save that in clause 12 it was thought desirable to provide that the Government should inspect departments before the Commissioner entered upon his duties. Iho original clause provided that the Commissioner himself should inspect the departments. Clause 37, requiring separate examinations to bo held for the professional and clerical divisions, was deleted. Tho Bill was reported as amended. The Defence Bill. Mr. Bell moved the second reading of tho Defence Bill pasesd by the House. Ho said that en effort had been made to meet the difficulties of the religious objector so far as was possible, and he hoped members vould recognise that these objectors could be accommodated with ambulance duty. After a brief discussion tho second reading was carried on the voices. Minor Bills. Tho Widows Pensions an Taien Land Drainage Bills were read a second time, and the Council rose. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. The House met at 2.30. Tho Iren Industry. The Prime Minister moved to sot,vp a Select Committee to consider a petition from F. W. Hayhittlo and live others regarding the iron and steel industry in tiieDominion, the committee to consist of Messrs, oraigie, Fraser, Lee, Malcolm, Nosworthy, McKenzie, Sidey, Veitcli, G. M. Thompson, Wilkinson, Davey and tho mover, and to have power to call for persons am; papers, tho committee to report to the House within seven days. The Gov eminent had no intention of introducing legislation on the matter this session, he said, hut he understood that some important evidence was available, and would be put before tho committee. The motion was carried.
