REQUESTS FOR WATER.

TO BE CONSIDERED BY THE WORKS COMMITTEE.

Recently three ratepayers petitioned the borough Council to have tne water laid on io tneir houses, situated in Romeo Street. The matter was duly referred to tiie Overseer for an estimate, which was received at tne special meeting of the Council last night. Mr. J. it. Sullivan estimated Unit the cost of the work would he £e2, and tne annual revenue derived therefrom on the present water rate would oe £.L

Councillor Thompson moved that the matter be referred to the Works Committee with power to act, They must remember that previously the Council refused to grant water to a ratepayer, but on tne ratepayer personally interviewing the Council, the request was granted. Councillor Healy spoke against the motion. With regard to the case mentioned by Councillor Thompson, he pointed out that the difference between the interest and cost was only 3s. He moved as an amendment “that the -work cannot be done.” He was quite in sympathy with those people who had been refused water, but the revenue derived must bo reasonably close to paying interest on the cost ol work. Turee or four ratepayers had been “turned down” in tins matter. Councillor Ward was in favour of giving the supply, but stated that the question was, could the Council afford it ?

The Mayor was of the opinion that the- Council should grant these requests for water, even if they had to be held over for a while. Councillor Healy: You can’t make flesh of one and fish of another! -U will cost the Council from £IOO to £i6o if you grant all these request) for water, where the rates derivable don’t pay interest on the cost of installation. Make it retrospective ad I’ll vote for it. Eventually the motion was carried, amended so as to take into consideration all former requests received and refused, the “power to act” being changed to submitting a report.
