TAUPO - TOTARA PETITION
THE COMMITTEE’S REPORT. (Per Press Association.) Wellington, October 16. The report of the committee on tin Taupo-Totara Company’s petition wat presented to the House this afternoon The findings of the committee were as follows: —(a) The committee dote not recommend the Government t> XKirchase the railway in the mannei and on the terms suggested by tin. Company ; (b) It does not recommenc the Government to grant the praye. of the petitioners to be allowed L purchase 200,000 acres of native land; g) It is of opinion that it is desirable imat inducements be offered to setdons to occupy land in the vicinity o, the tram line and of Lake Taupo, and to this end facilities for economics, transit of manures and produce art necessary; (d) The committee recommends that an Order-in-Council In granted to the Company to extent their line to Taupo, and that the Gc vernment guarantee the cost not ex feeding £56,000, on adequate security, and on conditions securing: (1) Thai the construction of the permanent w.n is carried out. to the satisfaction of the Government; (2) That uniform freight and passenger rates over the complet(d system from Putaniru to Taupo ar controlled in the public interest; am. ■ (6) That the Government have tin - right at any time to purchase the Jim ; and plant in working order at a price not to exceed the actual cost of construction, such price to include goodwill.
