COUNTY COUNCIL.
YESTERDAY’S MEETING. The Stratford County Cornual concluded their monthly meeting yesterday afternoon. Cement Pipe Works. Replies were received from a number of local bodies circularised by the County Engineer with reference to the establishment of cement pipe works, requesting co-opevat'on in the matter. Only one local bedy (Whanga v email .1) was in favour nt the s'dicmc, one questioned the legality < f r.uch co-opera-tion. and the others were either against the scheme, making the p : ncs themselves, or used so li-tlo that they did not consider themselves justified in entertaining the Council’s proposals. Councillor Smith: It’s a case of going on our own! Councillor Walter: If its the queans of bringing a pipe works into the district, it has done some good. The Chairman : But do you think they will start? The Engineer: If they don’t get more on con r.i moment than this, I don’t think they will. (Laughter.) Allocation cf Loans. Mr. W. J, Tristram, clerk of the Eltham County Council, forwarded a copy of a. resolution passed by his Council to the effect that the member for Eginont be waked, upon before leaving for Wellington and the position of the County be laid before him in regard to, loans raised some years ago by the Hawerii County Council, and other local bodies, concerning, n-"- ,- as now wholly and partly merged within the El tham County, and that be bo requested to endeavour to hive the law amended to enable apportionment of such loans rn:l ti e (r ns or of the liability tlioi enntlar. and vkh power to the ’ Councils thenceforth con-f-rned to collect the ( respective special rates thereon. The Eltham Cmm(■•ll asked the co-operation of Stratford in support of this very necessary ammidment. The resolution was endorsed. Correspondence. A letter from Mr. Chas. Wateliorn was received, asking the Council to assist him in building a bridge over the Funiwhakau Stream near its junction to the Mangaohu River.- Ive. erred to the Engineer and Cr. Young. It was decided to agree t:i jp renewal of the lease of a gravel reserve at M.di.irst on present terms. Mr, W. R. Tate (Rowan) asked for permission to purchase 12yds of crushed metal. —Referred to the Engineer. ‘ Mr. J. 13. Ellis) wrote that hip Council had approved of the Waipuku Bridge, and were entirely satisfied with it in every way.—Received. Crazing Run Tenure. The Clerk of the Wanganui County Council (Mr. A. 0. Mannington) forwarded a copy of the following resolution, which ho asked tho Council to support: ‘‘That in view of tho necessity for continued heavy expenditure on - roads in this district passing through lauds held on the. small grazing run tenure, the Government be urged to grant the right of conversion to”frcehold to the lessees of the said land, thereby making the collection of an adequate rate fair to tho lessees, who are now suffering an injustice by the present mode of rating. It was decided to acknowledge receipt of letter, and to state that the. matter was one which did not effect this County. A Rise in Wages. A long discussion ensued on the wages of the foremen, and permanent workmen, and it was proposed to raise the wages of the men Is per day, and, as an amendment, to raise only tho wages of the foremen. Councillor Smith moved: “That th j resolution passed on 17th July, thao the Council would put in a tuum-l and filling on the Barclay Road; provided the settlers interested find half the cost, lie rescinded.”—Carr.cd, the Council now to spend £SO, the settlers to provide cue-third of the cost. The tender of Mr. E. \V. Green for the metalling of one mile of the Waiwiri Road was accepted. An application for metalling on the Lower Calmer Road was referred to the Engineer for a report t next meeting. Councillor Young moved that leaders be called for the supply of m i n tonanco metal on the Mang elm R .ad. -—Carried.
