BYZANTINE RUINS UNEARTHED.
SARCOPHAGUS STOLEN BY TURKS. Constantinople, September 29. The remains of a Byzantine temple havo been unearthed near the mosque of Mohammed in Stamboul. During some canalisation work several stately columns were discovered, together with smaller finds, including a sarcophagus with a marble lid carved with a cross. This was stolen by some Turkish workmen, who laid it on the floor of a tavern where they had gone to drink. There it was seen by some Greek workmen, whose notice was attracted by the cross. They regarded it as sacrilege that the sarcophagus bearing the sign of the cross should be in the possession of infidels, and a fight started in their attempt to seize the relic. The police were called in, but the disturbance led to the preservation of the sarcophagus.
