Mr. J. W. B. Jones was absent from the School Committee meeting last evening, on account of an attack of mumps. This epidemic is still very prevalent in the district.

"Coney" is nov an old man, and lias been very many years m the Dominion.
Mr. H. M. Campbell, M.P. for Hawke's Day, who has be.ui seriously ill with typhoid fever, is slowly progressing towards convalescence. He will, however, probably be unable to take his place in Parliament a;/ain this session.
The residents of Taumaruiiui have formed an undenominational committee to procure funds to help the Hey. H .0. T. Hanby, who was injured in tho Taumarunui tramway acc'deut a few weeks ago, and to provide him with an artificial foot.
Mr. John Brunette, a very old resident of Hawera, died yesterday morning. Deceased was born in London in 1837. In the year 1870 ho, with his wife and family, came to New Zealand in tho ship Monarch, and settled in Christchurch, where he remained for eleven years. Ho afterwards decided to go to Hawera, and has resided there for thirty-one years. Tho deceased, who was' a jeweller by trade, took an active interest in everything pertaining to the welfare of the town (says the 'Star'), and was for many years a member of the Hawera Borough Council. At the time of his death he was president of the Swimming Club and a member of the Chamber of Commoice and Technical School Committer He had also been connected with many other of the local bodies. Mr. Brunette was a Justico of the Peace. He was at one time a prominent Freemason. The deceased leaves a grownup family of eight, twenty grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
Yesterday afternoon at Wellington Sir Joshua Williams was presented by the legal profession of New Zealand with a pair of massive silver candelabra in celebration of the Knighthood conferred on him. Among those present were Sir Robert Stout, all the Supreme Court Judges at present in Wellington, Mr. Riddell S.M., leading members of the legal professions, Legislative Councillors, members of Parliament and others. Mr. H. D. Bell, who made the presentation, said all were proud of'the public-record which Sir. Joshua had attained, and appreciated the courtesy, which ho had accorded to young and'old, and which had adorned the Bench so much. They hoped that for many years he would retain his position on the Bench; and assured, him ,that ho, would never Ipso the place' ho, had gained in the affec'tibris of those who 1 best knew him, 'and had the best means- of knowi'Tig, jbimlas.ia maji andf as a'. Judge. !Mr. Hosking, K.C., on behalf of the Otag-> Law Society, endorsed Mr. Bell's remarks. Sif Joshua suitably replied. The inscription on the salver reads: '.'Presented to the -Hon. Sir JoshuaStrange Williams, Knight. Justice of the Supreme Court of the Dominion ol New Zealand, by the District Law Societies of tho Dominion, in token of the effection and admiration iii i which ■his Honour ,has ever been .held,by the legal profession throughout the. Dominion, and in grateful recognition of his long and distinguished judicial setvice, his eminent learning, and his ex alted character."
