'Hares arc few in supply." Australians are selling at about 2s. A PROSPEROUS BANK. London, October 13. . ,„The English, Scottish, and Australian Bank shows a profit of £229,015. The interest paid on perpetual stock amounted to £99,041; £45,000 was addt ed to the reserve fund and a dividend of 8 per cent, declared; £14,385 was added to the cancellation of deposits fund, £SOOO to the officers’ fund, and £32,443 carried forward. WHEAT AND FLOUR. London, October 13. The wheat and flour afloat amounts to 2,490,000 quarters, that of the Continent being 2,145,000 quarters; the Atlantic shipments total 501,000 quarters, the Pacific 750,000 quarters; the total Europe 169,000 quarters, Argentine 74,000 quarters, Russian 460,000 quarters, Danubian 213,000 quarters, India 170,000 quarters, and Australasia 36,000 quarters. HIGH COMMISSIONER’S REPORT. Wellington, Monday. The following is the High Commissioner’s report under date October 12. (Note: Quotations, unless otherwise specified, are average market prices on spot):— Mutton.—The market is quiet; Canterbury 4*d, North Island 4§d, River Plate 4.id. Lamb.—There has been no alteration in the market since last week;. Canterbury s£d, other than Canterbury 5 id. Beef.—The market is dull; supplies are increasing; Now Zealand, hinds 3|d, fores 2jd. Butter.—The market is very firm for best quality. Large stocks of butter of scicond-clasfe quality are in cold store; Danish 131 s, Siberian 112 s, Australian 115 s, New Zealand (nominal) 1245. Cheese.—The market is quiet; small business is doing; Canadian, white 64s 6d, coloured 65s fid. Hemp.—The market is firm at an advance and has excited good demand for all descriptions; spot New Zealand good fair grade £3l per ton, first grade £3O; fair current Manila £29 10s; J anuary-March New Zealand good fair £3l 10s, fair -grade £3O 10s; fair current Manila £3O 10s. The output from Manila for the week was 26,000 bales. The stock of New Zealand hemp is 610 tons. Wheat.—The market is quiet; Now Zealand long-berried wheat, ex-granary per quarter of 4961b5, 39s fid; shortberried, 395. Oats.—The market is dull, and there is very little business doing; New Zealand short (sparrowbills), ox-granary, per quarter of 38-llbs, 2Gs Gd. Beans.—The demand is improving, but prices arc unchanged ; New Zealand f.a.q. (new crop) per quarter of 5011 bs 38s fid. Peas.-—The market is firm, but tbe demand is only moderate; New Zea-
land (partridge), per quarter of GO libs, 40s 6d. Linseed.—Tlie market is dull and unsettled; Bombay 60s 9d, Calcutta 60s, River Plate 565. Cocksfoot Seed.—Tlio market is very dull. LONDON WOOL SALES. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., and Reduced, have received the following cablegram from their London house under date 10th inst.:— The sales closed strong, 136,000 bales of wool being sold, of which 48,000 were taken for the Continent and 6000 for America; 7000 bales were held over. As compared with last sales’ closing rates, prices are higher by about 5 per cent, to 7$ per cent, for merino, medium and inferior and coarse scoured crossbred; and higher by about 10 per cent, for coarse greasy crossbred. AUSTRALIAN MARKETS. Sydney, October 14. Bran and pollard have advanced 10s, and New Zealand potatoes £l. Newton King’s Stratford Weakly Report. At the Haymarket on Saturday there was a fair attendance, and a moderate number of pigs were penned. The market for all lines was a little better than of late, every pen being cleared. Quotations: Weaners 12s to 10s 6d, small stores £l, porkers £1 16s to £2, calves Is 6d to 14s. At the Mart:—Poultry: Hens Is 7d to 2s lOd, roosters up to 2s, potatoes (table) 8s to 11s cwt., seed potatoes Northern Star 6s to 7s 6d sack, White Elephant 6s 6d cwt., White Rock 14s cwt ,Up-to-Dates 8s 6d to 9s cwt. Furniture and sundries and drapery selling well.
On Wednesday at Burnside (Dunedin market) some 3642 sheep were penned. The sale for good 'sheep was not quite so brisk as last week, a reduction of Is per head being recorded, while unfinished suffered a greater decline in values, a decrease of Is 6d per head being registered. Prime wethers sold at up to 33s per head, and prime ewes up to 255. Forty-six spring lambs were penned, and these made from 16s up to 295. Lamb values were a little easier than those ruling last week. There were some nice useful cattle in the 154 head yarded. At the commencement of the bidding for the cattle values were about equal to those of the previous Wednesday, but as the sale wore on (says the 1 Times) prices went back somewhat;, and towards the end the bids 'given were not considered sufficiently remunerative, and the cattle ' were ; ;. i ■ i -i ( ■ turned, cut,, unsold, ( values dropping off to the extent of 10s per head. ■Prime; bullocks fetched uvp : to -LI?- 55,and_ heifers up to £l2 ss. Good competition was experienced for the 135 fat pigs and porkers and the 24 stores yarded.
