NEW ZEALAND MEAT.

Ten years ago, it may be remembered, ; the Hon. R. J. Seddon, on the advice of Mr H. C. Cameron, brought before Parliament a scheme whereby shops for the sale of Xew Zealand meat should; be opened in different towns in Eng- ■ land, and by this means the quality ! of tlie Dominion sheep and lambs be i prominently brought under the. notice 1 of the British public. The House set up a committee to consider the pro- j posal of which Mr T. Mackenzie—he ! had not then attained to the honourj of a Minister—was appointed chair-1 man, but it rejected the innovation, and the House accepted its verdict. It is, says the “Otago Daily Times,” interesting to note, however, after all these years, that the Australian Government has seized on the idea originally promulgated by Mr Cameron, and its officers have now taken over premises situated in Bishopsgate, near the Great Eastern Railway Station, where in the spacious windows a fine display of Australian-grown fruit was being made in August, to be followed in September by an exhibit ,of Australian butter, and this -month hf wines. A picture of the large windo'w .shows the overseas goods ■ attractively displayed, over .the door being the word. “iAiiistralia”! ih very large letters. Mr Mackenzie, oltr new High Commissioner, will endeavour on bis arrival in London to introduce at this late hour a scheme, which ho at one.time presumably helped to reject remains to be seen.
