The Imperial Trade Commission will occupy a fortnight investigating cmi- ! gration in relation to overseas develj opment. Mr Hunter, of Sydney, and New Zealand emigration representative has been examined. The Westralian, Queensland, and South Australian representatives will give evidence next week. LAKE DISAPPEARS. A -large salt lake at Northwitch has disappeared, millions of gallons being emptied. A chasm 200 ft. deep has been caused by the subsidence. TRIBUTE TO AUSTRALIANS. (Received 1.50 p.m.) San Francisco, October 10. Air Starr Johnson, addressing JiCland Stanford University students, paid a high tribute to the Australians as footballers. Ho said the Australians played solely for the love of the sport, and Americans had much to learn in this respect. Stanford in 1903 adopted Rugby in preference to American football, believing it cleaner sport, and wisdom of such an action had since been proved.
