NEW BOOKS.
“GRIT LAWLESS.” “Grit Lawless” is the title of Miss F. E. Mills Young’s latest novel, and it is likely to gain even more favour than “Sara’s Kid.” The title is the hero’s nickname • gained for reckless courage in South African exploits, and .bestowed upon him by one who becomes his greatest enemy and almost his murderer. Lawless, a cashiered army man, who appears to have determined, on the expiation of the one incident which ruined bis career, is cast aside by bus beautiful wife and goes to South Africa. Later she follows him, but pride prevents a reconciliation. A second plot runs beside Lawless’ own story in the struggle to the death with a gang of blackmailers, in which' some strong work and powerful situations are shown. The novel is probably Miss Mills Young's best work so far, and is bound to be in great demand. (London; John Lane. Christchurch: Whitcombe and Tombs, Ltd., 3s 6d).
