RAILWAYMAN KILLED

Wellington, October J. Thomas Cook, a labourer employed iu the Westinghouso brake section of the Rotone Railway Workshops, was Allied this afternoon. He was slipping a hand-brake on a Main Trunk carriage, which had been placed on the examination road in the yard, when a shunting engine came right on to the rear of the carriage and ran over him. Death was instantaneous. Deceased was forty-live years old. He held decorations for service in Egypt ;ua South Africa. Twelve months ago he came to New Zealand on account of ins wife’s health. He leaves a widow ami one child, aged seven years, in straitened circumstances.

INVERCARGILL TRAMWAY FATALITY.

Invercargill, October 4

The Coroner (Mr. G. Cruickshank) formally recorded his verdict in the recent ‘tramway fatality, resulting in tho death of Frederick Smith, that deceased was accidentally killed while attempting to hoard a moving tramcar. Mo referred to the contradictory nature of the evidence as to tinlength of time deceased was under the car,’ and said that, from records supplied by the tramway officials, supported by outside evidence, ho could nut find it proved that deceased was under tho car for more than twenty minutes, and probably.,}! minute or two less. However, in any. case, the said length of time deceased was under tho car militated greatly against ui.s chance of recovery. BICYCLE FATALITY. Timaru, October 4. Miss Kate Millar, aged 30, died at neon to-day as the result of a fall last evening from a runaway bicycle.
