INSPECTION OF PIGS.
The contemplated rigorous inspection of pigs, which the Government is about to enforce is the outcome of action taken some time ago. In order that nothing but sound and healthy pigs should be converted into meat, ham or bacon it was enacted about twelve months ago that all pigs should be thoroughly inspected by Government officers at time of killing, and in the event of the animals proving]
unfit for consumption, compensation ■.should he allowed by the Government to the extent of 2d per II) up to 2001 hs and Id per pound over that weight. Previously it was only Id up to 2001 Its. It is to this fact that a special announcement which Messrs W. Diniock and Co., Ltd., publish for the benefit of fanners, specially reiers. It oppears that from now onwards, haconcurers will purchase pigs subject to Government inspection only. Certificates showing the number of. pigs condemned, and signed by the Government’s Veterinary Department, will be sent to suppliers immediately after the pigs have been slaughtered, and compensation allowed for by the “Slaughtering and Inspection Act’ will be paid in due course by the Department of Agriculture. The public will be reassured to know that such care is being taken to 'ensure thoroughly wholesome pork and bacon reaching the consumer.
