The Lokalangeiger rebukes the German bourses for failing to exhibit selfcontrol over the Balkan crisis. Most of the newspapers see the chief hope of peace in the empty Balkan war chests. Lloyds report that six Greek steamers are detained in the Dardanelles. It is rumoured that a three-days’ •
ultimatum will he given to-day, and if rejected the Powers will he informed that war will begin after a further lapse of three days. The Powers made strong representations to the various Balkan States
in favour of peace. The state of the Exchange is nervous, and there is heavy selling of foreign bonds. Continental bourses are depressed, £IOO,OOO being lost by panic-stricken investors in Germany. The Daily Mail’s Vienna correspondent states that many speculators have been ruined as the result of debacles on the stock exchange. Most table stocks fell heavily.
Indications show that Austria and Prussia have arrived at a close understanding to prevent) war, and if they fail to take the necessary measures for circumscribing it.
