At the Dominion Day dinner, Mr Fisher, proposing the toast of New Zealand, trusted that the time was not far distant when the people managing the affairs of New Zealand and Australia would come closer together. It was the duty of the two countries that lay in Australasian waters and the South Pacific must come under their protection. What was said regarding New Zealand applied also to Canada. Sydney, September 27. The Court has concluded its enquiry into the foundering of the Tathra in the New Hebrides on January 4. The vessel took in so much water that she became unmanageable. The Court is unable to discover how the water was shipped. The master's theory that it entered open portholes is untenable. The master's and ..officers' certificates were returned. The Court held that it was unwise to omit sounding the well twice daily. JEvery ocean-going craft of such tonnage should be compelled to carry ready bent the minimum amount of canvas. Suva, September 27. The wrecked lumber boat Endeavor was towed off the reef and brought fifteen miles to port. Rising seas broke' her lines, and the vessel drifted on to the reef, breaking up. The purchasers expect to save a greater part of the cargo. /A European overseer named Joansen has been gent to gaol for fourteen days for ill-treating an indentured Indian labourer. It was his sixth offence.
